Very heavy fire at bicycle company in Bruges: « Building completely lost », plume of smoke from far (Bruges)

The plume of smoke from the heavy company fire in Bruges is far to be seen by kilometers. The bicycle company was closed at the time of the fire. What may have caused the fire is not yet clear. The fire brigade is still in full swing and extinguishing. « The moment the fire started, nobody was present in the store, » said Lien Depoorter, spokesperson for the Bruges police. “So there are no injuries. We still ask to avoid the environment. « 

The fire brigade already got the fire under control in the first part of the shed. Currently there is still extinguishing in the rear part of the warehouse. The fire is still raging there. « When we arrived with different teams, the flames already hit the roof, » said Jeroen Bonte, Major at the Bruges fire brigade. “We immediately started attacking the flames on the first compartment. That piece is under control. The fire may have arisen in the middle of the company. « 

Thousands of bicycles and electric two -wheelers are stored in the shed. « The building is completely lost, » says Bonte. « We will probably be busy here for a long time. »

Currently, the Bevrijdingslaan, an important access route to Bruges and the Expresweg, is completely closed. Fire brigade teams from different zones are on the spot, but fighting against an inferno. “Please avoid the Waggelwater area. The smoke blows in the direction of Sint-Andries, so please keep windows and doors closed.  » The police also ask all those present on the spot to stay as far away as possible.
