Larger than train or Uster, but without elected politicians: The Geneva city of Vernier should become a special case because of possible election manipulation. Right in the middle: Pierre Maudet’s party.
Imagine a city in the size of Uster ZH, Schaffhausen or Zug suddenly stands without government and parliament. This scenario will come to Vernier on June 1st. Even if the Geneva community is hardly known in German -speaking Switzerland, it is one of the twenty largest Swiss cities with 37,800 inhabitants.
Actually, the executive politicians elected in Vernier should have put their oath on Tuesday evening. Just like those from all other Geneva communities. The suspicion of choice manipulation means that the inauguration is blocked in Vernier. « This gives a bad picture of our community, » says a re-elected FDP member. « We don’t know how to proceed. »
Doubts about panicked voices
But from the beginning: In the first ballot at the end of March, the party Liberté et Justice Sociale (LJS) founded by Pierre Maudet succeeded in entering parliament in Vernier – as the third strongest force. Over 600 LJS ballot papers had been changed in a similar way: some names were painted and systematically replaced by two or three same candidates. These three rather unknown politicians reach top results.
Why should voters of Maudet’s movement systematically choose three politicians from other parties without an official election recommendation or mobilization along cultural lines seems plausible?
Vernier’s population chose in spring – but those who will lead the city remains uncertain.
