Vance: War in Ukraine will not end « any time soon »
US Secretary of State Marko Rubio and US Vice President Jay Di Vance have expressed uncertainty about the chances of reaching a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine, a day after Washington and Kiev signed an agreement that gives the United States access to Ukraine’s mineral resources.
« I think we know where Ukraine is and we know where Russia is right now … They are closer, but they are still far away, » Rubio told Fox News.
Vance, speaking in a separate interview with the network, went further, saying the war in Ukraine would not end « any time soon ».
Rubio said that if there was no real breakthrough in the war in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump would have to decide how much time to devote to the negotiation process, he said.
The United States has already warned that negotiations have come to a « critical » phase, and a lack of progress may mean that it will leave efforts to mediate the end of the conflict.
Rubio said last week that although « real progress » has been made in talks to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine to a full volume, « those last few steps of this trip will always be the most difficult, and that should happen soon. »
Trump, who began his second presidential term in January, announced that one of his top priorities was the end of the war in Ukraine. He called for an emergency and complete ceasefire and demanded that Russia stop with non -selective attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Vance said he was « optimistic » to secure a cessation of fighting, but would eventually depend on Kiev and Moscow.
« They are those who have to take the last step, » he said.
-It will depend on the Russians and the Ukrainians now that each side knows what the conditions for peace of peace are.
