Van Vroonhoven sees little in new negotiations about asylum: ‘That’s not how it works’

NSC party leader Nicolien van Vroonhoven does not intend to break open the outline agreement to meet Geert Wilders’ requirements. She said that on Tuesday morning at the start of the weekly coalition consultation, that Wilders focused on Monday afternoon with a press conference: The PVV again threatened with a cabinet trap if the coalition does not take extra asylum measures (legally unfeasible).

« I think it’s quite a bit and I’ll say that later, » Van Vroonhoven told the collected press. « The fact that we are talking about heated measures for the third time within a year. We have carefully negotiated the coalition agreement. He (Wilders) can warm up new measures every time, but it doesn’t work. »

Afterwards, the coalition politicians did not let go of what had been said inner rooms. BBB leader Caroline van der Plas said that the parties have « discussed that we will definitely talk further ». For concrete decisions about Wilders’ ideas, the weekly coalition consultation of ‘an hour’ had really taken too short.

Threat Wilders

How much patience can Wilders yield? If there is no movement in ‘a few weeks’, he said Monday, « then we’re gone. » When asked if Van Vroonhoven still believes that threat, she said, « Well, we’re going to see it. » BBB leader Van der Plas is not very concerned about a cabinet trap. « It just has to happen quickly of course, everyone agrees. »

From the VVD it remained silent – party leader Dilan Yesilgöz did not want to say anything to the press on Tuesday, just like Wilders. On Monday, VVD MP Queeny Rajkowski will know the absence of ‘the strictest asylum policy ever’ to PVV asylum minister Marjolein Faber, who would not deliver ‘on the structural solutions that we have already agreed’. The VVD does not accept it « if the implementation of our agreements is even more delayed, » she threatened.
