Valchev: We will not have a must -have in religion, nor will the church enter school

We will not have a mandatory hour in religion, we will have a compulsory elective hour. The hour will be a compulsory curriculum, but there will be a choice between programs. It will be obligatory to be a good time, an upbringing hour in good, but not the study of religion as a compulsory program or in its confessional meaning (ie by religion)S This was stated by BTA Education Minister Krasimir Valchev in Pazardzhik, where he visited schools and met with principals, teachers and business representatives.

The alternative, according to the Minister, the program will be presented on Wednesday (May 8). It will include « many more virtues, ethics » and there will be « elements of studying religion in an exploration, comparative aspect, pluralistic, not dogmatic, but the emphasis will be on virtues. »

Krasimir Valchev emphasized that in her preparation, his team has borrowed experience from both programs in other European countries and experience in Bulgarian schools.

He also denied the allegations that priests would teach in class:

Will he make « virtues and religion » « our children » good

« The second suggestion is that, almost, the clergy will go to school, the church will enter school – no, no. This hour will be led by teachers qualified by universities, higher education.

« What we offer – virtues and religion – are actually two alternative paths for the same purpose. The goal is to make in the children a value formation as recorded in the law. Moral development is the goal of any education system. Every education system, except to make the children knowledgeable and capable, they have to make them good people, » Krasimir Valchev said.

The subject of virtues and religions can be introduced earlier from the 2026/2027 school year in the first grade.

Approval for a compulsory subject « religion » has decreased by nearly 30%, but that does not mean negation

Dual training

One of the topics in the Pazardzhik Minister’s conversations was related to dual training (Working through work – ed.) and planning the number for admission after 7th grade in vocational and profiled high schools.

« I instructed the regional education management to comply with the needs of the business. We need more technical staff, » the minister said, adding that « our biggest problem in socio-economic development is the shortage of technical staff. Therefore, they are closing businesses, which is why investments and investors are reflying. »

In Bulgaria, in the place of 100 people who retire, 62 young people come to replace them. Even more dramatic – in his words – is this break in technical staff.

« Only 40 are young people with technical education who replace them. Therefore, with the admission, with the scholarships, with the dual form of education, with additional funding for vocational high schools we make to direct more classes, children, students in vocational education, » Valchev said.

This will probably mean shrinking in profiled classes, most of which are foreign language.
