Uxemburg: Artists call for Gaza

From Lambert Schlechter to Vicky Krieps, from Marco Lorenzini to Jean-Marie Biver-especially artists are among the first signs of the Appel « Gaza is dying: We urge you to act! »

Writers, actors, directors, film producers, musicians, architects, designers, educators, historians and philosophers, but also former politicians, such as former Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn and the former Minister of Culture Erna Hennicot-Schoepges, contact the Luxembourg government in an urgent appeal.

They demand a determined political action in the face of the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip. Initated, the call was called « Jewish Call for Peace », a Jewish association in Luxembourg, which is committed to the two-state solution Israel-Palestine.

The signing are deeply concerned about the continuous suffering of the Palestinian civilian population and the inactivity of the international community. « We are calling the Luxembourg government to listen to the growing voices in our own country, » the text says.

Return to universal values and humanity

These voices from civil society, from art and culture not only express their outrage about the events in Gaza, they also demand a return to universal values and humanity.

The call demands that Luxembourg exerts diplomatic, economic and political pressure at national, European and international level in order to end the continuing violence and destruction by Israel in the Gaza Strip and in West Bank.

Over 15,000 children killed, countless other injured, amputated, traumatized, orphaned.

The suffering of the children is particularly emphasized: over 15,000 have already been killed, countless other injured, amputated, traumatized, orphaned. There is a lack of everything: water, food, medical care, education, protection.

« Gaza has become a cemetery for medical staff, media and humanitarian helpers, » it continues.

Teaching from World War II and the Shoah

The appeal is strongly reminiscent of the historical teachings from the Second World War and the Shoah. The international law created at the time was a protective shield for humanity – but only if it is used universally. « It shouldn’t just apply to some and refuse to others. »

The time to act is now, it is said in the text, not only tomorrow, « if only commemorating and regret remained. »

The undersigned emphasize: It is not about participation, but about humanity and justice. « Kill and starve children to destroy their future and bring immeasurable suffering about civilians – this is not to be justified with any ethical scale. »

Peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians are only possible through an end to the crew, colonization and oppression. « One day our children will ask what we did, while other children and their parents were bombarded and destroyed in front of our eyes. This time nobody will be able to say: We didn’t know. »
