UWV is allocating 111 million for reparation wrong WIA benefits

The UWV expects to need around 111 million to repair errors around WIA benefits that are paid out (Work and Income to Labor Capacity Act). This is apparent from The annual report published on Wednesday from the benefit organization. The UWV appeared to have made mistakes between 2020 and 2024 when determining the benefits, so that tens of thousands of people have received too much or too little money.

For that period, the UWV will manually check 43,000 benefits for possible errors, and has already included a provision for possible supplementary payments and implementation costs in the annual report. If a benefit turns out to have been too low, it will be raised retroactively. The UWV charges approximately 53 million euros in supplementary payments and 58 million euros in implementation costs. In total, the UWV therefore sets 111 million euros apart, although the amount for the supplementary payments can be higher or lower.

If people have received too high benefits, it will in principle not be recovered, « unless the person could reasonably have known that the benefit was too high, » the annual report says. That was in March also the starting point that the ministry mentioned.

25 million in penalty payments

The board of directors mentions the situation in the preface of the annual report « particularly painful for the clients involved who are often in a vulnerable position ».

In addition, the annual report published on Wednesday shows that the organization had to pay 25 million in penalty payments in 2024. That is about 7 million more than a year earlier. The UWV must pay a penalty if it does not respond to a benefit application or objection on time.
