USA removes a group that collects Russian war crimes evidence
The US withdrew from an international group in charge of colliding evidence of possible Russian war crimes in Ukraine.
The International Center for Accusation of the Crime of Aggression to Ukraine (ICPA) brings together investigators from various European and US countries, under the aegis of Eurojust, the European Union Agency (EU) for criminal judiciary.
« A few weeks ago, they (the United States) announced that they had retired … Unfortunately due to a change of priorities in their Justice Department, » the Eurojust president said Thursday.
“We regret the fact, of course, but at the same time, we will evidently continue to work with the participants who are still part of the group, added Michael Schmid.
Until January this year, the ICPA collected about 3,700 evidence from 16 countries and intended to be used in possible accusations of war crimes against Russians in the Ukraine War. This was started on February 24, 2022, when the Russian forces invaded the neighboring country.
« To tell the truth, we don’t know exactly what will happen in the future, » Schmid admitted, adding, « But our intention is to continue. »
