The fugitive was the head of the local police in the small town of Gateway in Arkansas. In 2017, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of an employee of the Gateway Municipal Services, and two years later he heard two sentences after 25 years in prison for two rapes for the teacher. The total penalty was 80 years, which in practice meant life imprisonment for Hardin.
