Up to 40% of students leave universities until the diploma is received – Kommersant

The Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Dmitry Afanasyev submitted data, according to which from 15% to 40% of Russian students do not complete training at universities. According to him, most of them leave educational institutions due to « inability to study. »

“Therefore, we have a huge request to the general education system. We are working together to ensure that the quality of mathematical, natural science and humanitarian, of course, it grows up to the most prepared, knowledgeable applicants, but motivation is still very important, ”Mr. Afanasyev said at the Hrexpo Pro forum (quote for Interfax).

The deputy minister noted that in the new education system it is necessary to « increase practical training. » This, according to him, will allow us to “adapt” students to the future profession, as they will be able to receive additional qualifications during training. “Given the huge shortage of personnel in the labor market, of course, the value of each graduate is increasing,” concluded Mr. Afanasyev.

In February, President Vladimir Putin stated that students of Russian universities are losing interest in a future profession and throwing training due to « outdated and archaic courses. » In some engineering areas, up to 40% of students do not finish training, these data “simply reset” all the plans of the authorities in terms of personnel training, the president noted. He instructed the Ministry of Education and Science to update the university courses, modernize school programs in mathematics and natural-scientific subjects-the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Education.
