Uncertain future for the skirting success coach Johannes Lukas

On Monday, the A-national team was presented in biathlon for the Olympic season 2025–26.

Johanna Skottheim is back in the national team squad after a last year where she trained in her own direction. Emil Nykvist goes the opposite path.

The A-national team starts The preseason with a training camp in Crete, May 10-17, organized by the Swedish Olympic Committee. The Olympics in Italy will be decided in February 2026, but if there will then be more championships for coach Johannes Lukas is unclear.

The German who once started as an intern at the coach profile Wolfgang Pichler, and who has been Sweden’s head coach since 2019, has a contract that expires after the season.

He has an open dialogue with the biathlon association, says Lukas at a digital press conference:

– Right now it’s about setting a good plan for this year, it’s an important year with the Olympics. Then all other thoughts on what happens after the Olympics will certainly during the summer and autumn.

Lukas has coached Swedish biathlon for record seasons in the World Cup and both the Olympic and World Cup gold.

How special is it to go into the season and know that you « only » have a year left on the contract?

– Right now it still feels good, it is perhaps more outward it is thought more about it. But then it is obviously an important point to talk about and discuss, for me at home privately but also for the union – that you develop a strategy for the next few years.

Skottheim in – Nykvist out
It is the only change in comparison to last year’s season.
« Very fun to be back in this environment and be saved against some of the world’s best, » says Johanna Skottheim, who last year trained in -house.
Sports manager Anna-Maria Uusitalo adds about Emil Nykvist, who in consultation with the national team chooses its own investment to be able to train more at home:
« It is important to be able to go your own way as well. We wish him only good luck. »
