UN warns that humanity is destroying biodiversity
The UN Secretary-General warns that humanity is destroying biodiversity at a stride, pollution, climate crisis and ecosystems destruction. António Guterres emphasizes that it is necessary to change the way of producing and consuming. The warning is made on the International Day of Biological Diversity (or biodiversity), created by the United Nations and that is marked this Thursday.
In the message, the secretary general points to finger on short-term interests, « which incite the unsustainable use of the natural world, » and warns that the loss of biodiversity is a worldwide problem, that no country, however rich and powerful, can face alone.
In addition to a change in the way it is produced and consumes, to achieve sustainable development, it is necessary to fulfill the worldwide staff for Kunming-Montreal biodiversity, the Plan approved in Canada (COP15, 2022) to stop and reverse the loss of diversity, argues Antonio Guterres.
« Policies, regulations and other incentives oriented to support sustainable forms of life and build strong green economies, » says the official, installing governments to take advantage of the progress of the Rome meeting (COP16) on resource mobilization, and eliminate public support to activities that harm nature.
« Like the theme of this year’s International Day recalls us, living in » Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development « is the way forward for humanity to build a better world for all, » says the secretary general.
The Kunming-Montreal Agreement establishes the protection of 30% of the planet by 2030. Because the life of humanity depends on biodiversity and that today biodiversity depends on humanity, the UN appeals to sustainable use of natural resources and the recovery of ecosystems.
