UN condemns the Rwanda and requires a ceasefire at Congo

The UN approved a resolution project that, for the first time, condemns Rwanda for supporting the offensive of the M23 group in eastern the Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC), asking for withdrawal «Immediate of the troops».

The Resolution Project, by France, gathered the approval of all 15 Member States of the Council. In recent weeks the rebels have taken control of two key cities in the eastern region of Congo, rich in minerals. Also according to the UN, the rebels are supported by about four thousand soldiers from neighboring Rwanda. After the conquest of both cities, the rebels threaten to march to the capital of Congo, Kinshasa, located over 1,600 kilometers away.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame accused Congo homologist Felix Tshisekedi of neglecting the concerns of Tutsis ethnicity in the country and disrespecting previous peace agreements.

However, the United Nations representative in France, Nicolas de Rivière, said that « There is no military solution to the conflict. » «The M23 offensive, supported by the Rwanda, has to end. The priority is now to reach an effective, unconditional and immediate ceasefire agreement »he said. This request was well accepted by the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC), having Zénon Mukongo Ngay, representative of the United Nations, stated that “Although the council has been time to come to a consensus, its resilience is evident. On behalf of the government and all I sincerely thank all the board members ».
