Ulf Kristersson defends donations to orphanages
After three years presented the Adoption Commission last week its investigation for the government. Investigator Anna Singer recommends that all international adoptions be stopped. As chairman of the Adoption Center for a couple of years in the 00s, Ulf Kristersson argued against proposals for tougher rules on donations, among other things.

The Commission concluded that donations to the orphanages were operating on child stores. You were against a regulation of this at that time. How do you look at it today?
– It would have been a huge difference if Sweden had paid solely for the child who is adopted and did nothing for the many more children who are allowed to continue living in orphanages. That was what the discussion was about, says Ulf Kristersson.
– If you have seen orphanages around the world, you know that most people are forced to remain there. If they do not have decent circumstances, it will have terrible consequences, he continues.
Given what we know now, shouldn’t have a regulation come before?
– You can always discuss whether the laws have been right. Laws are often changed when new information is obtained. I do not exclude any of the proposals made by the Adoption Commission. But we should not throw ourselves into hasty conclusions, says Ulf Kristersson.
He believes that the activities he led worked in the laws that then applied and under the supervision of the authorities.
Ulf Kristersson was also pressed for the adoptions in Wednesday’s party leadership debate.
