Ukrainian scientists in Antarctica managed to filter the « elusive » stripes – representatives of whales, who, unlike their large « relatives », rarely reach a length of ten meters.

This mammal is also much less likely to fall into the field of view of researchers, told at the National Antarctic Scientific Center.

In the video, which is shared by the polarists, you can see a couple of stripes that swim near a boat of scientists. Swimming further, the animals are slightly squeezed, then they dive deeper into the icy waters of Antarctica.

Scientists have said that these whales are one of the smallest of the strip, because they weigh up to ten tons, and often do not reach 10 meters in length. They can be found in all oceans of the Southern Hemisphere of the Earth. In Antarctica, stripes visit Antarctic summer, as they can feed there.

With the advent of winter, huge mammals change their place of residence to warmer waters to the north, where they multiply. Nevertheless, some stripes can wait for winter near the icy continent.

Animals can be recognized from afar due to a characteristic sickle fin, which has a rounded and pointed shape at the same time. Usually the mammal quickly moves between the ice floes.

Due to such a maneuverability, the Antarctic strip is quite difficult for research: to fix the meeting with it, and even more so to measure it or select biopsies – great luck.

However, our scientists already have the results of research that are ready to share. Wait in one of the following posts ”– the polarists shared.

We will remind, in 2024 scientists were first succeeded watch by how the blue whale feeds its baby. Scientists filmed a young mammal near his mother.
