Donald Trump indicated that negotiations Aimed at ending the war between Ukraine and Russia are doing well.
According to him, however, there may be a moment of « when you have to accept or be silent, » Reuters reported.
Thus, Trump said the day after his special envoy Steve Witkoff negotiated in St. Petersburg with Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to reach a peace agreement. However, Trump himself, according to Reuters, showed that he was frustrated from Russia, and referred Kremlin’s chief Vladimir Putin to « move ».
« I think the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia may be OK. You will soon find out, » Trump told reporters on board the Air Force One presidential special. « There is a point where you have to accept or mushroom, and we’ll see what happens, but I think it’s going well, » he added at the same time.
Witkoff and Putin interviews were held at a time when a dialogue between the US and Russia on an agreement on the ceasefire in Ukraine was stuck on a dead point for disagreements related to the conditions of full stopping, the agency wrote.
Trump has suggested that he was losing patience with both parties, and he spoke of the imposition of secondary duties on countries that buy Russian oil if Moscow is to delay the agreement.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Russian diplomacy chief Sergei Lavrov praised Trump for understanding the Ukrainian conflict better than any other Western leader, especially when it comes to what Russia describes as the need to solve the underlying causes of war.
« President Trump was the first and so far, I think, almost the only one of the Western leaders who, repeatedly, convincingly, said it was a huge mistake to draw Ukraine into NATO. And this is one of the main reasons we quoted so many times, » Lavrov added.
The US reached separate agreements with Ukraine and Russia in March, in which both countries agreed to suspend mutual attacks on their energy infrastructure. However, Moscow and Kiev have been repeatedly accused of their violations.
According to AP, these accusations continued at the conference in Turkey, where Lavrov and his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiha spoke at separate events.
Lavrov insisted that Russia adheres to the conditions of the ceasefire and claimed that they were Ukrainians who have been attacking Russian energy objects with two or three exceptions from the first day. According to him, Moscow plans to provide the United States, Turkey and international organizations with a list of Ukrainian attacks in the last three weeks.
Sybiha questioned Lavrova’s claim and stated that Russia released from the consent of a limited suspension by a blow to Ukraine « nearly 70 missiles, more than 2200 drones and 6000 sliding bombs », which mostly headed for civilians. « This clearly shows the world who wants peace and who war, » Sybiha added.
