Donald Trump’s administration is trying to convince the Republican Senator Lindsey Graham to significantly mitigate his bill on sanctions against Russia. Informed about the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The key provision of the bill, which has already been supported by 82 senators, is a proposal to impose sanctions against key Russian representatives and sectors. 500 % duties for countries buying Russian oil, gas and uranium would also be introduced.

WSJ sources said that the White House and other US administration representatives have contacted Graham’s team in recent weeks and urged to alleviate this proposal. He urged him to include the exceptions that would allow Trump to choose who or what would be subject to sanctions. Graham also asked to replace the words « must » in the text of the bill, with the words « can », thus eliminating the binding of the passages.

WSJ noted that, in principle, every administration asks for changes in important laws and often seeks a formulation that gives the president greater decision -making powers. However, as the sources of newspapers said, the draft law will be transformed into a « toothless ». WSJ said that Trump already has the opportunity to impose sanctions at his discretion.
