Russia represents conditions

US President Donald Trump had previously made this claim. It is supported by the four top European politicians. « We confirm our support for President Trump’s demand for a peace agreement. Europe and the USA are pulling together again

It is the first joint journey of the heads of state and government of the four major European allies in Ukraine to the war zone. Merz has only been in office since Tuesday. He had prepared the visit with a phone call with Trump.

The United States and Europe now seem to be pulling together for the first time since Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine – at least in this one point. In the past few months, Trump had tried to end the war. So far he has been unsuccessful. Trump had massively put Selenskij under pressure to make concessions to Putin. The Europeans, on the other hand, warned of a dictation peace.

Talks with Selenskij and memory

In Kyiv, the four heads of state and government want to have talks with Selenskij and commemorate the war dead. Merz, Macron and Strandmer arrived together on Saturday by train. The Polish Prime Minister Tusk, whom you had met on Friday evening, traveled separately.

At a provisional memorial on the central independence place, the politicians parked lanterns on Saturday and took a minute of commemoration. The ceremony took place with a Ukrainian guards.

For Merz, it is already the fourth capital he visits for Merz on the fourth day in office to Paris, Warsaw and Brussels. He has set himself the goal that Germany assumes more international responsibility again. He always calls France, Poland and Great Britain as the most important partner in Europe.

Explanation with two central elements

The quartet published at night contains two central elements. On the one hand, the four major European countries emphasize that they are willing to support peace talks as soon as possible in order to discuss the technical implementation of an armistice and prepare a comprehensive peace agreement. The bloodshed in Ukraine must end and Russia ended its illegal invasion. The goal must be that Ukraine could exist as a safe and sovereign nation « within its internationally recognized borders ». This is also a cancellation of Russian regional claims. The Russian invasion forces control around 20 percent of the Ukrainian territory.

On the other hand, the German Federal Chancellor, the French President, the British Prime Minister and the Polish Prime Minister emphasized that more pressure on Russia, which Ukrainian cities had shot again in the past few days. In the direction of Moscow, the explanation states: « We will further expand our support for Ukraine. Until Russia agrees to a permanent ceasefire, we will increase the pressure on Russia’s war machinery. » Merz had spoken of the willingness in Brussels to significantly tighten the sanctions against Russia.

Virtual meeting to European team

During the visit to Kiev it is planned that the heads of state and government on the Maidan will resign wreaths for the fallen Ukrainian soldiers and victims of the Russian attack war. In addition, together with the Ukrainian President Selenskij and several dozen other countries, a virtual meeting is planned to deal with a supporting European troop according to a peace agreement. France and Great Britain had started planning for such a unit together with a “coalition of the willing”. There should also be a joint press conference in Kyiv.

Russia is unimpressed

Russia reacted calmly to the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine including new threats of sanctions from the West. Russia will not be intimidated by this and has got used to the punitive measures anyway, Kremlin spokesman Peskow told state television in Moscow. « We even imagine what we do after the imposition of these sanctions, how we will minimize your consequences, » said the Kremlin spokesman. « To scare us with sanctions is in vain. » (APA/dpa/Reuters)
