Ukraine and Russia are still far from reaching an agreement
Ukraine and Russia are still far from reaching a peace agreement despite recent progress, said US Secretary Marco Rubio, warning that without timely progress, President Donald Trump could reconsider the role of US in mediation.
The positions of the two countries regarding a peace agreement « have approached, but they are still far from each other and it will take a major progress very soon to make this possible, » Rubio said in an interview with Fox News.
Otherwise, he added, « President (Trump) will have to make a decision on the time we will dedicate to this. »
The US, Rubio said, is experiencing other pressing global issues, giving as an example the commercial conflict and Iran’s nuclear plans.
The US Secretary of State has reiterated that there is no military solution in the war in Ukraine – Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot conquer the whole country and neither Ukraine can push Russian forces « back where they were in 2014 ».
Russia has rejected Ukraine’s proposals for a long -term fire, saying that Kiev must raise an alleged ‘legal prohibition’ on negotiations.
The US, who also want a permanent fire cessation, have expressed their dissatisfaction with Moscow counter-offenders, including a mini-worker between May 8 and 10.
Previously, in an interview with Fox News Digital, US Vice President JD Vance said the US will « work hard » in the next 100 days to approach negotiation positions between Ukraine and Russia.
Asked at what stage the negotiations are, Vance said that « the first step needed to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is for each of them to make a peace proposal. »
« And that really happened. The Ukrainians said, » We want it. « The Russians said, » We want « , and now the task of diplomacy is to try to bring these two positions closer. Because there is a great gap between what the Russians will and what the Ukrainians want, » he stressed.
« So, I took this first step, » added Vance. « We have the proposal of peace launched and issued and we will work hard in the next 100 days to try to bring these people together. »
