Ukraine Ambassador becomes new security adviser – DN.se

The position as national security adviser has been vacant since Henrik Landerholm resigned in January. Landerholm was forced to resign because he is investigated for crimes after carelessness with classified documents in connection with a conference at Gällöfsta Herrgård. DN has also revealed that Henrik Landerholm has caused two other security incidents: that he forgot his mobile at Hungary’s embassy and forgot a notebook on Swedish Radio.

The new security adviser Tobias Thyberg Tobias most recently comes from the role of head of Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Between 2019 and 2023 he was Sweden’s ambassador to Ukraine and before that Ambassador in Afghanistan.

« In a time of several parallel threats to our country, coordination and focus of Sweden’s national security is central. When I was asked to lead this work, it was obvious to me to say yes. Now I look forward to starting work, » Tobias Thyberg said in a press release.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) Emphasizes Thyberg’s experiences as central because he is the right man for the job.

« Ambassador Tobias Thyberg has unique knowledge and qualifications to coordinate and focus the government’s work with Sweden’s national security, assist me as prime minister on security policy issues and represent Sweden in the international network of security advisors. I look forward to working with Tobias who makes his first trip in his new role already today to the JEF meeting in the Jef meeting Press release.

The national security adviser is a newly established service created by the current government. The National Security Counsel assists the National Security Council and the Prime Minister on Foreign and Security Policy Affairs and National Security issues.

Facts.Tobias Thyberg

Tobias Thyberg most recently comes from the role of head of Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was before the head of the Unit for UN issues. He was Sweden’s ambassador in Ukraine between 2019-2023 and before that ambassador in Afghanistan.

He has worked on the EU’s common foreign policy, both from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Stockholm and from the EU delegation in Georgia. Tobias has also served at the Swedish Embassy both in Washington DC, in Moscow and in New Delhi.

Tobias Thyberg did military service through studies in Russian at FRA.

He will take up his new position today, May 8, 2025.
