UK introduces chemical castration of sex offenders
The British government will introduce the use of drugs to suppress sex drive in sex offenders in order to reduce the risk of repeated offenses and reduce pressure on the prison system, Justice Minister Shabana Mahmoud said today.
The so -called chemical castration will be used in 20 prisons in two regions of the country.
« It is essential to implement this approach together with psychological interventions aimed at other reasons for committing these crimes, » she said.
Although it was indicated that chemical castration would not be effective for some sex offenders, Mahmoud said research shows that it could reduce the repetition of a 60 percent crime.
That measure is used in Germany and Denmark on a voluntary basis, and in Poland it is mandatory for some perpetrators.
The recommendation for the introduction of chemical castration is part of an extensive revision of the British prison system led by former Justice Minister David Guk.
GOK was looking for ways to reduce repetition crimes in order to facilitate the operation of the prison system that is almost full.
The new minister, Mahmoud, approved GOK’s program for early release of criminals from prison.
GOK’s audit predicted the abolition of penalties less than one year, except in exceptional cases, such as domestic violence, and he demanded urgent deportation of foreigners sentenced to less than three years in prison.
