UK and EU in partnership with defense and security

The United Kingdom and the European Union (EU) announced Monday a partnership for security and defense in a summit in London. The goal is to respond to the growing « volatility » on the European continent, particularly in the face of the Russian threat.

« The positions of the United Kingdom and the EU in terms of foreign policy and security are closely aligned in many issues related to perspectives and global challenges, in light of shared values, including the promotion of democracy and commitment to defense of international law, » reads a document published on the summit.

This was the first high level meeting since London left the community bloc in 2020 and the agreed pact aims to reinforce cooperation on issues such as Ukraine support, safety and defense initiatives, including the defense industry, equipment and personnel mobility and space safety.

The partnership provides for regular high -level meetings and strategic consultations between EU and British government officials, as well as collaboration with peace, cybersecurity and combating hybrid threats. The protection of critical infrastructures such as telecommunications cables and submarine electricity is also awake.

The pact does not immediately ensure access by British companies in the defense industry to the European Military Program Security Action for Europe (Safe), which will mobilize 150 billion euros in credits for joint military equipment.

But this partnership opens the way to negotiations on the terms of participation in European contests for weaponry acquisition.
