U18 Juniors dominate against Norway, but only the after -game shootout series / day wins
The Latvian U18 team is in Group A, along with Canada, Finland, Norway and Slovakia. Subgroup B is played in the US, Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland and Germany. The top four teams in each group will qualify for the quarterfinals, while the fifth place winners will play in the elite in one game. The victory over Norway could also be enough to qualify for the top four teams in the group, or in the quarterfinals. In the second game of this group, Slovakia was able to beat Finland by 1: 0.
Latvia remained in a numerical minority against Norway at the very beginning of the game, but Roberts Naudins intercepted the puck in the opponent’s area, after which Martin Klaucan sent a pass with a shot at an awkward height of the puck. The Norwegians were helped by « Ricochet » in the 12th minute. After that, the predominance of young Latvian hockey players was already expressed. « I had probably never seen such a dominance over the opponent’s team from the second period during my U18 team training, » said Oleg Sorokin, the head coach of the U18 national team. You have to agree with the coach that Latvia deserved to win in regular time, but the success in the aftermath of the shootout can also be crucial to preserving a place in the elite after the group tournament.
