Two weeks to a vote for president in Romania – who will take the voices of Georgesko

Two weeks to a vote for president in Romania – who will take the voices of Georgesko

After the Romanian Constitutional Court did not allow Kalin George, the far -right independent candidate who surprisingly came first in the first round of the first round at the end of last year, one of the issues that arrived in the public space was how the votes of his voters would be distributed in the first place at the end of last year. These are over 2 million voters out of a total of 19 million Romanians with a voting right.

In the first round of the presidential election on November 24, 2024, George, designated by a number of media as a pro -Russian candidate, was a winner by nearly 23 percent after a massive election campaign in the Tictor platform, and second place ranked the candidate of the Opposition Pro -European Union for Romania (SSR) Salvation (SSR). The elections were canceled after intelligence information revealed doubts about external intervention, in particular from Russia – something that Moscow denies.

In March, the Central Election Bureau, and later, the Constitutional Court decided not to admit a new George candidate, against whom in the meantime an investigation into charges of six crimes, including actions against the constitutional order and the establishment of a fascist organization, was imposed on a prohibition of leaving the country.

George’s candidacy was enjoying the active support of two far -right parliamentary parties – an alliance for the Romanian (Aur) Unification (Aur) and Pot Party, and after its rejection leaders of Aur and Pot George Simion and Anamaria Gavril, they were in the presidential. Subsequently, the president of Pot withdrew, and so George Simion, the leader of the second largest party in parliament, emerged as the main candidate of the sovereign.

However, a number of media outlets have noted that Kalin Georgesko has not expressed in any public statement support for George Simion’s candidacy for the presidential election. « We have a well thought out plan. We know what we have to do from now on. There is no none of the sovereignt movement created by Kalin George, who has hesitations about this, » Simion said in response to a question on the Hotnjuz site on the subject.

At the same time, some analysts have identified the former prime minister and former leader of the Social Democratic Party, Victor Ponta, also as a sovereign candidate because of some of his positions, which suggests that Ponta is trying to attract part of Kalin George’s electorate.

Ara Public Opinion study, commissioned by antenna TV 3 CNN and published on April 15, shows the possible distribution of votes obtained by Georgesko, between the candidates in the first round of the presidential election in May, Ziare’s website reports.

According to the poll, carried out by telephone between April 9 and 13, 2025 with the participation of 1115 people, only about one -third of George’s voters will redirect their voices to George Simion. Kalin Georgesko achieved an unexpected result in the first round of the November 24, 2024 elections – over 2.1 million votes, but only a small part of his supporters seem resolved to the upcoming vote, Ziare notes.

According to the poll, 37 percent of George’s supporters will direct their voice to Aur leader George Simion, 5 percent would prefer the ruling coalition Coalition Coalition Coalition, 4 percent would vote for former Partyo Party. However, as many as 12 percent of George voters say they have not yet made a decision, and 41 percent have refused to respond or have indicated that they will not vote.

Although he would not participate in the May elections, Kalin George remains a preferred candidate for a number of Romanians, with a quarter of the study participants saying they would vote for him again if his application had been accepted and 67 percent said they would not support him again. 9 percent replied that they did not know or did not want to answer.

As for turnout, 57 percent of the survey participants have said they will vote in the May elections, 19 percent said they would not vote and 24 percent – that they had not yet decided. These numbers show the likelihood of high vote instability and a contested struggle to attract the electorate, which has not yet made a decision, Ziare notes.

The sociological studies published in recent weeks have pointed out the leader of the far -right aur as a favorite for the first round of elections in May, but the arrangement of other candidates varies significantly. A number of polls also suggest that despite his good positions on the first round, Aur leader has little chance of winning the second round.
