On Saturday morning the European Running European Championship started in Leuven with the Half Marathon. With about ten thousand runners it was a great success, although the emergency services unfortunately also had a lot of work. A dozen participants were transferred to the hospital, and two people were resuscitated. Their condition is now stable.
The half marathon took place under good weather conditions and a radiant sun, but that heat also caused a danger to the runners. « There are a lot of people on the road, » reports Marc Vranckx from Police Leuven. « It was mainly about runners with muscle pain and dehydration problems. »
A dozen people were sent to the hospital for extra care. « Here too it was mainly about dehydration and people who had a shortage of sugars, » he explains. « Two of them were resuscitated. It is about two people in their twenties, and their condition is now stable. They will remain in the hospital for observation for observation, » says Vranckx.
Also during We Ride Flanders, the Tour of Flanders for Cycling Tourists, the emergency services had their hands full last weekend. Then two participants died.
