Two new rescue ships on the way to Iceland
The accident prevention company Landsbjörg has signed an agreement with the Finnish shipyard Kewatec on the construction of two new rescue vessels.
The new vessels, which are scheduled to go to Vopnafjörður and Patreksfjörður, are ships number 7 and 8 in the renewal process of all 13 of the company’s vessels.
The ships will be delivered next year, 2026. The first ship is expected to be delivered at the beginning of the summer, but it will be delivered later. When the ships arrive in the country, 60% of the company’s rescue vessels will have been renewed since the first ship was delivered in the Westman Islands in the fall of 2022.
Four vessels have already been in use and two vessels are expected to arrive in the country later this year. Now it is shortened that ship 5 will arrive in the country with Eimskip and will be located in Höfn in Hornafjörður. Ship 6 is well under construction and is expected to be in Ísafjörður this fall.
Jón Þór Víglundsson, Landsbjörg’s information officer, says the renewal process has gone beyond hope. He adds that by 2028, 100 years have passed since the founding of the company and he hopes to complete the renewal process on the centenary.
