In the Brussels municipality of Sint-Gillis, two residents of an apartment building were transferred to the hospital on Sunday morning after a kitchen fire. One of the two was out of consciousness on the arrival of the fire brigade.

The fire brigade was called to the apartment building in Belgradestraat around 11.15 am when a neighbor remarked smoke development in a flat on the ground floor. When the fire brigade arrived, she had to force the door of the flat to give herself an access.

« We found the resident unconscious, » says firefighter Walter Derieuw. “She had forgotten a cooking pot on the fire and that gave rise to a small kitchen fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, but there was a lot of damage in the kitchen. The resident was stabilized on the spot and then taken to the hospital with a MUG team. We accompanied the upstairs neighbor through the stairs and she was also transferred to the hospital. ”

Smoke -detector

A smoke detector was present in the affected flat, but it did not work, according to the firefighter:

Two weeks ago, the Brussels government launched a prevention and awareness campaign to move the Brussels residents to install smoke detectors in the house. That is mandatory by law, but still does not happen enough. Via the website smoke detectors.brussels, citizens can learn everything about the meaning of a smoke detector, and also obtain more information about the technical specifications and requirements for smoke detectors.

The smoke detector must meet European standards and work through an integrated battery with an expiration date of ten years. « They must be of the optical type, with Label EN 14604, » says the firefighter. « They must be placed on the evacuation road, and must be tested and disposed of regularly. »
