The accident happened around 4 pm in the garage on Lilos Street, south Alcorcón. Originally, the death of a firefighter was confirmed due to heart failure, while the disappearance of another firefighter was reported. However, a few minutes later, his lifeless body was found.
The injured firefighter has been intubated and transferred to the University Hospital of Getafe, where he is currently in a critical situation at the Burns Department. The other six injured persons sustained minor injuries, mainly due to smoke inhalation, and medical assistance was provided on their spot. All injured persons belong to the municipal fire department.
According to the first reports, the accident arose when the neighbor experienced an incident with his electric vehicle when entering the garage, which caused a fire on his vehicle and then on other cars. The tenants of the building told the Effe agency that they had heard a strong bang, which sounded as if the vehicle had hit another car, followed by an explosion. The tenants then fled their apartments.
Upon arrival, the ambulance teams faced extreme conditions due to dense smoke and high temperatures in the garage. After the fire was extinguished, firefighters examined the affected area as well as apartments, and ventilated the garage.
The building was not evacuated, but the neighbors remained in their apartments for their apartment while the rehabilitation work lasted. Police also limited access to the area to facilitate the operation of emergency services, which included municipal and regional firefighting units, summe and local and national police.
Meanwhile, the Alcorcón Civil Protection Agency asked the population not to spread « unofficial information » on the incident.
« These are quite complicated times, » said social networks. Many members of the Alcorcón municipal authorities, including the Minister of Environment and the Interior of the Madrid Community, Carlos Novilla, and the Government envoy in Madrid, Francisco Martín, rushed to the scene.
The President of the Madrid Community, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, expressed « deep regret » for the death of two firefighters.
– All our love goes for their friends and family. May these two brave servants rest in peace – she wrote on social networks.
