TV review In the new King’s Song of Merol and Elmer, the princesses want to take pills
We didn’t really count on it anymore, but we have a new King’s song. Thursday evening the singers Merol and Elmer presented them ‘Princess Pil’ In the talk show Bar late (NPO1). They were dressed in pink and sky -blue princess dresses. Merol had a late medieval haircut with two turrets on the head. Cornettes are called, or Venetian horns.
The previous King’s Song appeared in 2013 in honor of the rise of the throne of King Willem-Alexander. The crippled lyricism united the people in deep scorn. The stanza « the day you knew would come » became a standing expression. Merol did not want to sing in her King’s song about the former ‘Prince Pils’ but about his daughters. According to the singer, they want to break out of their constricted princess life to go « to the Getver ». They « don’t wave to the people, but sniffing with the people ». They long for nights full of truth, they want to be « fingered in a dixie. »
This time it is good with the lyricism. Merol sings on a bed of festive electronics: « Princess pill, I want to take pills/ pussy castle can lick my butt/ Dad let me go ». Elmer raps: « Toet key/ there goes my carriage/ I have blue blood/ and a weird hat/ and I chew well/ on that pill in my face ». On King’s Night, the two blackbirds perform in the Concertgebouw.
In Flee (NPO3) Max Terpstra also follows young people who want to flee from their lives by losing themselves in alcohol and drugs. Or games, porn, an eating disorder. Terpstra’s own gambling addiction was the subject of the series Addicted to losses. Perhaps that gives him a good entrance among the five young people he follows for a year. This series is not very special, the stories of addicts are often told on TV.
A bad youth, psychological problems – they all have a good reason to look for the intoxication. The autistic Donovan has just been his birthday, which confronted him with his rumbled life: « I hate my birthday. Then I think: I have been useless for another year. »
Young caregivers
The young people in the beautiful reality series To assure (NPO3) Follow a path that is demonstrably useful: they start a nurse training. Sixteen, seventeen years are these MBO students. Very young. They are certainly not holy angels who sacrifice themselves. And that feels refreshing. In the classroom they are laughy, bothered, rough. They cancels Bloemrijk on early getting up, on the stink, on the insecurity – old people can swear, beat, grab you by the breasts. They mainly abhor the ‘buttocks and dicks’. You hold your heart when these children are released on our brittle elderly and the sick.
But then the metamorphosis comes: as soon as they start the internship, most of them turn to a firm carers who treat the patients with love and pleasure. The metamorphosis is particularly striking at Keyssy. At the age of fourteen she lost her mother, since then she has to take care of herself. That is not easy: « Lost match, Kevin fixed, pay for it, pay that. » She has remained seated because of too much truancy (« I had some home situations ») and radiates great reluctance in the lessons. But when she is in the home, with her hair loose, she seems to someone else. Blessed is the one who finds Keyssy at her bed.
The long descent, I know, that’s how we all go, but it is still confronting to see the bare decayed bodies in the picture. As a result, the reluctance of the young people becomes tangible. And that they have to overcome everything makes their work all the admirable.
