Turkish resort – earthquake: The most important information for tourists

Rimvydas Širvinskas, director of Traveldeals LT, said whether this resort can be available from Lithuania and where they should apply if they need help.

– What knowledge did you get from Turkey from Turkey? Was it a serious earthquake?

– Since the Marmaris district is not popular among Lithuanians, one of the great tour operators will start such trips only since mid -September, we received more knowledge from partners in Antalya district, where full -day planes are emerging Lithuanian travelers.

– Did you feel an earthquake in Antalya?

– I had to communicate with tourists who were. They mentioned that they felt the bed swaying at night and did not understand what could have happened here. Such was their greatest sensation about the earthquake that had taken place.

– We hear that the vast majority of injuries that occurred in Marmaris were due to the fact that tourists, covered in panic, jumped from hotels. Although the ruins have not happened, there are the injured. How to prepare a tourist so that when the earth starts to tremble, it does not jump out the window?

– I was more surprised that there were more victims there. Tourists usually live in low -rise buildings. How to prepare for us? We do not live in the seismic activity in the region and we do not know what to do in this case. The major tour operators in Europe, which are currently traveling to the Marmaris region, asked all travelers to calm down and respond to such situations as calmly as possible, not to take excessive steps that are not necessary.

In this case, a simple meeting with hotel staff, administration: what to do, whether it is safer to stay in the building, or go outside, as far away from the pillars, electrical wires, tall trees and so on. Hotels with large areas (and not only) have certain specially marked safe areas in some cases. Knowing or paying attention to such places, we will really feel more calm when we are on vacation. The attention of events like earthquakes, shows us the rarity in the world. Therefore, I would certainly not change holiday plans.

– Lithuanians, before going to the Balkan countries – Turkey, Greece, what homework should they do and look at? No one probably wants to think that an earthquake will take place during the holidays.

– Homework is simple. They start to prepare them if you are traveling with a travel agency or travel organizer, and staff, by sending important information to the tourist in the country, have a variety of cases that you would need to check on the page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs what the situation is today. For example, there is no mention of Greece at the moment that there could be some earthquakes, that it is a frequently recurrent situation and the like. However, there is a warning at Turkey. I think people would have enough warning – what could be in that direction and why you don’t have to worry strongly, but simply seek help from some professionals.

– If there is a major disaster, where should the tourist turn to? Who should take care of it – the state, the travel agency?

– First of all, those assistance services that are located on the spot: firefighters, ambulance and the like. Then – ask the information where you are. Maybe you are at an object – ask the staff what to do. You are in a hotel – ask the same. If you tell you how to leave and leave the premises during a recent earthquake in Thailand, ask what you have to do. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a special gadget called « Travel Safe », where you can register the travel route and, in the event of a disaster where Lithuanians are needed abroad, they will spread a message with contacts – perhaps the embassy and the like.
