Tupolew Tu-134 plane crash in Gabare. Poles were the victims
Little is known about the causes of the Tupolev Tu-134 plane crash. The investigation into the breakdown of the Bulgarian Airlines Balkans was hurried and secret. According to Interia, it was officially found that the electrician failed. The relatives of the victims, and 73 names were on this list, they did not believe the officials.

They rumped among themselves that the plane shattered because of the bomb or was mistakenly shot down by the Bulgarians or collided with the MIG plane, one of the hypotheses was a bomb on board. Speculation was intensified by the fact that the coffins, which were sent to Poland, allegedly with the bodies of the victims, were burdened with sand – said « Rzeczpospolita ». The then press – both Bulgarian and Poland, did not really deal with this topic. The articles were casual and laconic, and yet talented Polish and Bulgarian athletes and representatives of the PRL government were killed in Gabore. So why was the topic cut so quickly?
The plane stood in flames and exploded
It was on March 16, 1978. The Tupolev Tu-134 aircraft started after 1pm from the airport in Sofia. He was to land in Warsaw at the Okęcie airport. There were 66 passengers on board (including two UK citizens and 37 polk) and 7 people from the crew. Tupolev flew, among others Polish representatives in track cycling, Bulgarian gymnasts, which were to participate in the competition in Poznań and the delegation of the Polish government. It was composed of the then Minister of Culture and Art Janusz Wilhelmi, the brother of actor Roman Wilhemi and the clerk of the ministry Marina Nicikowska, wife of Ignacy Gogolewski.
Just 10 minutes after the start, the machine began to fall, and finally fell into fields in the village of Gabare. Everyone died on board. As « Rzeczpospolita » quotes one of the few witnesses of the disaster was the local shepherd Hristo Dinkin. He was supposed to say that he heard a strange humming and saw a falling plane, which suddenly stood in flames and exploded. The black box of the machine was to fall to the nearby river. The army was directed to the place and the area was surrounded by a cordon.

Locals were to help in collecting the remains of the victims. « They were pieces of meat and bones, I will never forget the delicate knee of a girl with painted nails, » says « Rzeczpospolita » the words of Tatiana Pawłowa, which were once in the Bulgarian newspaper « Truda ». Personal things of passengers did not go to their loved ones, because they were stolen, as well as fragments of the wreck.
Some time after the Bulgarian disaster, they put symbolic graves in its place, and a year later a monument. As Rzeczpospolita said, close to passengers, the area has been deteriorating for many years, and the monument is neglected. They reported that in the fields you could still come across an aircraft elements. – I think there are still the remains of the victims. We wanted to leave very quickly-said « Rzeczpospolita » Jarek and Radek Kowalikowie-Miklaszewscy, whose father was on board the machine. (TSEO/HS)
