Tuk Tuk restrictions help regulate « chaos » in Lisbon

The mayor of Lisbon said on Tuesday that the new restrictions on the circulation and parking of ‘tuk tuk’ will help regulate « the chaos » that existed in the city.

“It’s a good measure for Lisbon. The Lisbon were being massacred by a lack of regulation in the ‘tuk tuk’. We took this measure to help the ‘tuk tuk’ themselves,” said Carlos Coins on the sidelines of the presentation ceremony of an electric future that, in 2028, will connect Lisbon to Loures.

The circulation and parking of the ‘Tuk Tuk’ have had restriction zones from today in Lisbon, with the ban on passage in 337 streets of the capital, following an order of the City Council.

The order of the municipality, signed in February, determines the prohibition of circulation in various ways of the parishes of Avenids Novas, Arroios, Penha de França, São Vicente, Santo António, Mercy and Santa Maria Maior and the indication of zones for their stop and parking.

« It is an important measure for people’s well-being. Today we have already been able to see the effects of this measure, » said the mayor, quoted by the Lusa agency.

At the same time, today the Lisbon Municipal Mobility and Parking Company-EMEL began to supervise the road code in the city and will have a brigade specially dedicated to oversee ‘tuk-tuk’ and TVDE (individual and paid passenger transport in uncharacterized vehicles from electronic platform).

“One of the hardest things we have is inspection. So we will have the help of Emel who will be able to oversee,” said Carlos Coins.

The new EMEL brigade has 61 inspectors.
