Trump’s rates directly affect Romania
The Romanian MEP also says:
The decision of the US administration risks hitting the Romanian exports directly from the key industries: car components, industrial equipment, agri-food goods. The effects can be translated into losses of jobs and additional economic pressures for our companies.
It is not a crisis of the great states. It is also our problem. Romania risks being one of the strong countries affected by the cascade effects of the decision and, without a coordinated European reaction, will be left. Our country has a commercial surplus with the United States of $ 1 billion.
That is why, in the European Parliament, we came up with a series of proposals and we have already initiated steps for:
– compensation of losses through European funds, as it was done in pandemic or in the case of Brexit.
– thinking of a new EU -SUA commercial framework, balanced, stable and well negotiated, according to the British model.
– the opening of new markets for European and Romanian products, supporting a more braver and coherent foreign economic policy.
As vice -president of the European Parliament and a member of the delegation with the United States, we requested that the European solutions under construction include the needs of Romania. To understand the stake, the volume of trade between the US and the EU amounts to about one thousand billion dollars.
It is not the time of disproportionate confrontations. We need a balanced reaction, coordinated at European level, in which Romania’s interests are fully defended. Europe must be united, and Romania is active and visible in making decisions.
