US President Donald Trump has promised immediate negotiations on ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Vatican. Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform after a phone call to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin that the talks should begin immediately – and the Pope offered the Vatican as a place of negotiation. However, he did not give any further details – for example, who should sit there at the table.
« The negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are immediately accepted, » Trump wrote and emphasized that he had informed the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and European partner accordingly. « The process can begin, » continued Trump.
Direct conversations between Russia and Ukraine had recently existed in Turkey – albeit not at the highest level. On Friday, Ukrainian and Russian negotiators in Istanbul sat together for the first time in three years in order to negotiate the end of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Both sides agreed to exchange great prisoners, but the big throw was not successful – also because Putin was missing at the meeting he proposed himself. There was no agreement on the subject of ceasefire.

According to the US President, today’s call between Trump and Putin took two hours. It was the third conversation between him and Putin since Trump’s office in January. The Republican emphasized that the entertainment was « very good ». « The tone and the spirit of the conversation were excellent. If that wasn’t the case, I would rather say that now than later. »

Russia is ready to work on a memorandum with Ukraine, which would include an armistice, Putin said. Moscow wants to end the fighting, but the most effective way to peace must be found.
