Trump leaves G7 summit in Canada early for conflict in Middle East

That the conflict between Israel and Iran would overshadow the G7 summit in Canada was already clear before the US President Donald Trump and other leaders of the group of rich industria arrived in Kananaskis, a holiday resort in the Rocky Mountains. Careful plans by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss mutual trade tensions were swept by the conflict of the top of the agenda.

On Monday night that shift received extra urgency: Trump decided to leave the top early because of the situation in the Middle East, the White House said. He left after dinner with the other leaders of the G7, which consists of the United States and Canada of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. The top, the fiftieth in the group, lasts until Tuesday evening.

« I have to be back as soon as possible, » Trump said when taking the traditional group photo of the leaders, against the background of the Canadian Rockies. « It is very important, you probably see what I see », an apparent reference to persistent explosions in Tehran and Iranian air strikes on Israel on Monday. Host Carney said « to understand completely » why Trump leaves the day before.

Evacuation

Shortly before, Trump called on Truth Social on his social media platform for an immediate evacuation of the Iranian capital Tehran. « Iran may not have a nuclear weapon, » he wrote in capital. « I said it time and again. Everyone has to leave Tehran immediately. » Possibly the message was a warning for a large -scale Israeli attack on the Iranian capital.

According to American media, Trump has convened the US National Security Council. That advisory board consists of leading safety officers, including the Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs, Pete Hegseeth and Marco Rubio, and the national head of intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard. Rubio also returns to Washington.

However, the CBS channel reports on the basis of an American officer that the US does not join the Israeli attack on Iran – despite an earlier announcement of Hegseeth that the US is « using extra capacities » in the region. When Trump was asked on Monday, under the circumstances the US would join militarily in the conflict, he said, « I don’t want to talk about that. »

Commercial agreement

The White House emphasized that Trump did not leave Canada out of disagreement. « President Trump had a great day on the G7, » said Leavitt on social media, referring to the signing of a trade treaty between the United States and the United Kingdom by Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, following a previously reached Principle agreement. « A lot has been achieved, but because of the developments in the Middle East, President Trump leaves tonight after dinner with heads of state. »

Nevertheless, unity about the situation was hard to find in Kananaskis on Monday. Trump initially did not seem willing to sign a joint design statement about the conflict between Israel and Iran, in which both countries are called for restraint and an end to mutual attacks. Dozens of people died in such attacks in recent days.

In the end, the group, including the US, issued a statement in which Iran is labeled as « the main source of regional instability and terror » and the right of Israel to self -defense is supported. « We have always been clear that Iran should never have a nuclear weapon. »

Trump was skeptical at the top opposite the G7, a group that has been delivered by the USA since the formation in the 1970s. For example, during a meeting with Carney, he criticized the earlier decision to put Russia out of the group after the annexation by Moscow of the Crimea in 2014. Until that moment Russia was admitted to what the G8 had been called, to make Moscow a partner of the West. Trump suggested, without evidence, that in 2022 Putin would not have started the large -scale invasion of Ukraine if Russia had not been put out of the group.

Trump also said that he was open to China’s accession to the G7 – yet another indication that he has little interest in a role of the US as a standard -bearer of a liberal world order. In principle, the G7 assumes that.

Breakthrough

Nevertheless, other leaders interpreted Trump’s departure as a possible good sign. The French President Macron said he would see an indication that Washington thinks he can bring about a breakthrough. « If the United States can reach a ceasefire, that is a good thing, » he said. Iran and the US have been trying to reach an agreement for weeks on the voluntary stopping of Iran’s core program. Those conversations would continue at the weekend, but were canceled because of the attacks.

Due to his early departure, Trump misses discussions by the G7 leaders with the Ukrainian President Volodyymyr Zenskyy, who sits down for the last day of the top in Kananaskis.

Also, Trump is no longer in Canada for a first meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Like the leaders of a number of other countries, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, she is invited to join a part of the G7 top. Sheinbaum has not met Trump since his sworn.

Refurbishment

The invitation to Sheinbaum was probably a pass by Carney to give discussions about the USMCA free trade treaty of Canada, the US and Mexico an impulse. That agreement, concluded during the first term of Trump as the successor to the North American free trade treaty NAFTA from the nineties, has been violating by Trump since this spring with import duties on goods from both neighboring countries, the two largest trading partners of the US. The agreement would be re -negotiated in 2026.

There are now discussions between the US and Canada for a new trade and security cord. Trump, who has put a lot of bad blood with the northern neighbors with his repeated wish to make Canada a ’51st state’ of the US, said on Monday to be able to reach a new agreement with Canada within thirty days. He seems to scale the threats at the address of the neighboring country; Remarkably, he wore a pin of an American and a Canadian flag on his jacket on Monday.
