Trump introduces new duty of 25 percent

American car buyers may soon have a shock to the bill – and foreign car manufacturers even bigger headaches.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday night Danish time announced that the United States is introducing a 25 percent tariff on all cars not manufactured on US soil.

« What we’re going to do is (to introduce, ed.) A 25 percent duty on all cars not manufactured in the United States. If made in the US, there’s absolutely no customs, » Trump said, according to the White House news agency, writes the White House, writes Extra Bladet.

Cars, trucks – and soon spare parts

The new initiative not only affects passenger cars but also light trucks. The measure comes into force on April 3 at 00.01 American time – equivalent to 05.01 in Denmark – and according to Trump it becomes a permanent scheme.

But it doesn’t stop here. According to Reuters, imported auto parts will also be affected, however, with a postponement. Here, the customs will only be valid from May 3, 2025, according to Trump’s announcement.

The president also suggested that other goods such as pharmaceutical products and timber can get the same turn, but without going into detail. On the other hand, it sounded from him that people will be « pleasantly surprised » about what he called a « retaliatory duty ».
