US President Donald Trump in an interview with NBC (NBC) again threatened Iran with military intervention if Tehran fails to sign a nuclear program.

« If they (Iranians) do not sign the deal, there will be a bombardment, » Trump said.

He said US and Iranian officials were talking, but did not specify what.

On March 7, Trump sent a letter to Iranian authorities, proposing negotiations to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, threatening military intervention. Iranian authorities have responded that they are against direct negotiations under « maximum pressure and threats », but are open to indirect contacts.

Iran and the United States have no diplomatic relations since 1980, and US interests in Iran represent the Swedish embassy.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Iranian nuclear program has been advancing for the past four years and is closer than ever to the production of nuclear weapons, with current 60 percent enriched uranium reserves, sufficient for six nuclear bombs if 90 % are enriched.

In 2015, Iran signed an agreement with France, Germany, the UK, China, Russia and the United States to regulate the nuclear program, and in return to reduce international sanctions against Tehran. But in 2018, during the first presidential term, Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the treaty and reinstated sanctions to Iran. In response, Tehran increased its enriched uranium reserves to 60 percent.

Iran claims that nuclear energy is for civilian purposes and denies it wants to acquire an atomic bomb, which is suspected of Western countries.
