Trump duties can benefit Lithuania?

Witold Milius, the editor of Autobild Lietuva magazine, commented on whether these additional costs will increase the cost of cars.

– First of all, we all probably heard, not just cars, any industry -tight -in, Trump’s wishes and changes to bring everything back to America, to produce everything in the US and his statements that Europe is not taking their cars. It is true that the US is enough in Europe, Korea and Japan, but there are far fewer American cars. This is the truth and his wish, as an entrepreneur, to capture the glory of the US car industry is a very positive and desire for its voters.

Now who will get it? Any war in customs and economics does not lead to something good, usually at the beginning of some shock, stops, price changes, but after a while everything is again and goes to certain changes in changes or certain industries.

– The world is global, parts are made in different countries, other components are also imported and imported to manufacturers. Is there such a thing as a purely American, European car?

– In this situation, it is very difficult to find a nugget, especially when it comes to modern cars – electric cars. It is difficult because, for example, batteries will be from China or elsewhere. Yes, globalization is everywhere, but there are pure US manufacturers. We can still say that Tesla are American and are other old manufacturers who may be bad. The Teslai itself is not to succeed badly. Only the results of the last weeks or the month and maybe the headlines are more likely to be doing less well, but that doesn’t mean anything yet. This is such a short -term effect and everything can turn into the opposite direction.

– But Tesla is no longer the electric car manufacturer that sells most electric cars? There are BYD Chinese electric cars that are cheaper, more innovative and sell more than Teslas?

– Yes, Byd officially announced its presence in the Lithuanian market this week. Really good cars will unequivocally make great competition for everyone, both Teslai and other large European manufacturers. There is now a fight and there is no fact that the United States is the only one, the Chinese are coming with their things, the US is all kinds of perturbations, customs duties. In fact, European manufacturers have something to think about. And it is clear that they should become more expensive for US buyers who want to buy a European car.

– Is it known how much they will be able to become more expensive? Somewhere I read that there may be tens of thousands of dollars to an additional car bill, depending on the make.

– Nobody knows, probably business or manufacturers will count how they pay, to be or not to be and not to be compensated for somehow their losses. If people do not buy, they will not vote for European cars in the US, they will need to do something. Either cheap them or do something else in other markets. Either go to other markets or do otherwise in other markets. Lithuanian buyers can be good news and European cars may be cheaper.

– In other words, can we get out of it? Tell us about the health of European manufacturers or automotive industry. That health is not the best?

– Health is so diverse, it is not poor because we decide from the names we see in the press that two Volkswagen factory closes. Yes, two out of a hundred, not necessarily the best and most necessary. But the whole, of course, the Chinese come with the electric car production, which is still low in Europe and occupies a very small part to fight. Nothing is terrible, but their steps are very good and are really worried about European big manufacturers. This is not the easiest time, it is a time of change, I think very diverse.

– You mentioned that Europeans can win. But you know that in Lithuania, cars from auctions in the US are also very popular for a variety of reasons, even bringing them here are cheaper and so people get it. Does this mean that there will be no cheap cars that people drive with?

– Mostly both markets, both new and used cars have a certain interface. This means that if one becomes more expensive, it cannot be without change another. If cars of duties and all other tax rates are becoming more expensive, there may be no difference and everything, so much knowledge. Why is that trade going? Because there is a big difference between prices and anyone who sells can expect profit, others can expect to buy a car cheaper.
