Trump does not live up to threat and explains the EU import duties
US President Donald Trump proposes 50 percent import duties for the European Union what he threatened on Friday out until July 9. He said that on Sunday evening local time against reporters after a telephone conversation with chairman Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission.
According to Trump it was a « very pleasant phone call », in which he informed her her request to delve into a postponement. Negotiation teams of the US and the EU will now « come together quickly to see if we can come to a solution, » said Trump.
Earlier on Sunday, Von der Leyen had already said that it was ‘a good conversation’ and that the US and the EU still need at least a month and a half to arrive at a possible trade agreement. Until now, the negotiations have been extremely difficult.
In April, Trump imposed a general import tax of 20 percent, but then quickly pressed the pause button to reach an agreement through negotiations. There is still a basic tax of 10 percent and a tax of 25 percent on cars, steel and aluminum from the European Union.
