US President Donald Trump has announced that in six months he has suspended the entrance of Harvard’s foreign students, citing national security and assessing that allowing such enrollment is « harmful to US interests ».

Trump’s decision comes after a month -long conflict between the White House and one of the most prestigious US universities. Harvard had previously refused to meet the administration’s demands regarding detecting foreign students, which resulted in a cessation of federal funding.

In the latest announcement, Trump accuses Harvard of having « extensive links with foreign states » and « violating the civil rights of his students and teachers ».

« It has been established that it is necessary to limit the entrance of foreign nationals coming to the United States exclusively or primarily in order to study at Harvard, » the decree said.

In addition to the ban on new enrollments, the decree calls on the Secretary of State to consider annulling the visas issued for students who are already studying at Harvard, and the ban may be extended after the six -month initial deadline.

Harvard officials told Reuters that it was « another illegal and retaliatory move by the administration that violates the right to freedom of speech. »

The university points out that it will continue to protect its international students and fight the pressure of the White House. Currently, nearly 7,000 foreign students make up 27 percent of Harvard’s student body.

Trump’s decree comes shortly after the verdict blocking the previous decision of the Domestic Security Ministry to ban the enrollment of foreign students at Harvard. Minister Christie November had previously abolished the university’s certification needed to enroll foreigners, which was also stopped by court.

The White House also threatened to abolish accreditation at Columbia University yesterday over alleged violations of Jewish students’ rights during protests against the Gaza war.

The Donald Trump administration has stepped up pressure on US universities in recent months, accusing them of not taking enough against anti -Semitism. Harvard was also accused of « inappropriate co -operation » with authorities over security checks by international students, including deficiencies in data for three students.

According to White House comments, the Harvard ban could only be the beginning of a broader strategy to restrict international academic exchange, with an explanation of national security protection.
