Riyadh. US President Donald Trump He announced on Tuesday that it would cancel all US sanctions imposed on Syria to give the country under the new leadership a « chance of success ». He said it during a visit to Saudi Arabia.

« They have a new government that, hopefully, will be successful, » Trump said for applause at the investment forum. « I wish Syria good luck. Show us something special, » he added.

Trump’s decision was subsequently welcomed by the chief of Syrian diplomacy Assad Šajbání. He described it as a breakthrough moment for the Syrians who are trying to establish « stability, self -sufficiency and real renewal » after years of devastating civil war.

The United States introduced sanctions on Syria, when it was ruled by President Bashar Assad, who was overthrew in December in December by Islamist insurgents.

Trump admitted that sanctions were « brutally and crippling » for this Middle Eastern country, but at that time fulfilled an important function.

« But now the time has come to shine … We will cancel all the sanctions, » said the US President in Riyadh, where he will meet Syrian President Ahmad Šar on Wednesday according to Axios sources. He is still on the US Terrorist List for his former ties to al-Qaida and the Islamic State.

Trump said before departing to Saudi Arabia on Monday he was negotiating with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other leaders about the possibility of abolishing sanctions against Syria.
