Truck driver blows positively after accident in which child (4) was extremely wounded (Wijnegem)
A four -year -old child was taken to the hospital in a critical condition on Sunday evening after an accident on Houtlaan in Wijnegem. The young victim was in a truck as a passenger. The driver, her father, was under the influence of alcohol.
The accident on Houtlaan happened around 6 pm. A truck drove in the direction of Schilde. Just before the intersection with the Merksemsbaan it went tragically wrong. « The driver of the truck lost control of the steering wheel, causing the truck to go through the central reservation, » says chief inspector Kim Verdoodt of the local police Minos.
The truck shed a lighting pole in the central reservation and drove a tree. That tree crashed the windshield of the cabin, the truck eventually came to a halt on the road in the opposite direction. « A second car was also slightly damaged there, » says Verdoodt.
The emergency services immediately rushed on the spot. « The truck driver and his passenger, a four -year -old child, were injured, » Verdoodt continues. Immediately it was clear that the child was in very bad shape. According to our information, it is about the daughter of the driver, although that could not be confirmed yet.
Critical condition
« The young victim was in a critical condition and was brought to the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) in Edegem with a MUG team and under police supervision, » says Verdoodt. Due to the works on the Antwerp Ring, Sunday evening it was exceptionally busy on the highway.

How the accident could happen is not yet clear. The Antwerp public prosecutor has appointed a traffic expert. He will arrive on Sunday to map the precise circumstances of the accident. The local police Minos closed the Houtlaan in the direction of Wommelgem completely, in the direction of Schilde, one lane is currently free.
