Trill guys now smile all round
A total of 775 small boats had been allocated coastal fishing licenses in the middle of yesterday, but there were still unpaid applications from almost 100 additional boats.
It is clear, however, that not all boats will fulfill the set conditions for being granted fishing licenses, as Örn Pálsson, Managing Director of the National Union of Small Boat Owners, said in a conversation with Morgunblaðið yesterday.
« This is a big day, a big festival and a turning point in the history of the National Union of Small Boat Owners, where no more boats have been granted coastal fishing and 48 days are secured for the summer.
The fleet of small boats puts off land today to try to reach the 774 kilogram daily dose of cod that may be caught four days a week. The government’s intention is to authorize coastal fishing for four months this summer; in May, June, July and August, but it is not clear how to meet the additional catch that will be achieved in the country unchanged.
Last year, it was permitted to catch 10,000 tonnes of cod, but then 2,000 tonnes were added. It only suited the fleet until July 16. Based on the state of affairs yesterday, 342 boats in the West had been granted fishing licenses, 146 boats in the area from Strönd and east in Eyjafjörður. Fishing licenses for the North and Northeast were 91 and from South Iceland to Borgarfjörður they were 196. Last year, a total of 756 coastal fishing licenses were allocated, so they can be expected to be a little more this year.
