Trier is all about Marc Aurel

Trier is all about Marc Aurel

The time has come again: the German cultural scene, which Trier likes to neglect a little, will be increasingly looking at the Moselle city in the coming months. The reason for this is the new state exhibition, which Marc Aurel alias Marcus Aurelius is dedicated. Trier, formerly known as Augusta Treverorum, was once the largest city in the Roman province of Gallia Belgica. Emperor Marc Aurel never visited the place, but one of the most important monuments is thanks to him: the Porta Nigra, once the northern city gate.

The exhibition

The new state exhibition – the first show, which is completely dedicated to the life and work of Marc Aurel – is, as with the past editions, a joint work of several cultural institutions: The sub -exhibition « Kaiser, Feldherr, Philosopher » in the Rhenish State Museum is devoted to the life of the unusual ruler, which worked in Rome in the second century and under normal circumstances, such as Museum Director Marcus Reuter affirmed, « never had become emperor ».

The chronologically structured exhibition not only takes a close look at its reign, but also his philosophical legacy, which has been hidden over centuries. One focus is on his « self -considerations », which have been translated into dozens of languages to this day.

In part two of « Marc Aurel » in the Simeonstift City Museum, the exhibition organizers go to the question « What is good rule? » After without, as museum director Viola Skiba explains, to give an all -encompassing answer. Rather, the show shows in eight stations representations of forms of government in all its diversity.

The total exhibition area in both houses is 1,600 square meters.
