Tragedy toxicologist in Serbia: ‘Caution with septic pits, gases from them squeeze oxygen’
Three family members Jokic – Grandpa, son and 20 -year -old grandson and their neighbor, were killed in a septic tank in Ljubosel near Topola in Central Serbia, in all likelihood because of the poisoning of ammonia from the pit. The fifth victim is a woman whose life doctors are still fighting at the Arandjel Hospital. According to Serbian media, it is not known who was the first to die in the pit at the family pig farm, after which he had a help and had been awarded to him. The youngest deceased is Filip Jokic, a student of the economics in Kragujevac, while the identity of the injured woman is not publicly known. The Jokic is locally known for the widely famous barbecue, and these days they have prepared a private celebration that they wanted to mark the entry into the age of a family member.
According to unofficial information, they were all poisoned by ammonia from the pit, whose concentration was so high, that it was enough to just lean over the pit, and fainted into it. An ambulance arrived on the field, which was able to resuscitate the fifth victim, a woman, and take her to the hospital, while two of the arrived firefighters were more easily poisoned by entering the pit.
Croatia also remembers similar cases, for example, the one on Peljesac in 2015, when the father and son poisoned themselves while pumping a septic pit. The ambulance of the 60-year-old father failed to resuscitate, the son is, but he later passed away at the hospital.
Our famous toxicologist prof.dr.sc. Franjo Plavsic warns of the risk of unprofessional entry into septic pits, which can be very high concentrations of gases. The gas itself is not so dangerous, how much the fact that oxygen squeeze out of the closed space.
– Ammonia ‘produce’ We, in the urination, have it in the stables, but in small concentrations, and in spaces that have a flow of air. As with CO2, however, when the air is gone and the concentration is high, ammonia or methane squeezed oxygen and fill the space. The ammonia has a lot of effect on the lungs, so it is enough to lean only in the space that is filled with it, says prof. Plavsic, commenting on the allegations that the Jokic was killed. He warns citizens to use professional assistance when dealing with septic pits, because in such jobs it is necessary to wear gear gas detectors, masks and other protective equipment.
In addition to methane and ammonia, carbon monokisda and dioxide, there can also be a sulfide of the sulfide, which is very toxic, and in high concentrations causes suffocation. A large amount of methane can sample suffocation and explosion, ammonia « hit » on respiratory organs causing severe cough, breathing problems, lung stack.
The funerals of the deceased in Ljubosel is today, while Topola has also declared a three -day grief. On a protest on the Đak Square in Kragjevac, organized yesterday six months after the fall of a nap in Novi Sad, Filip Jokic was paid tribute, while his colleagues from Kragujevac Faculty said goodbye to him with an emotional message.
« His departure is not only a loss for family, but also for our entire college and the community to which he belonged, » Philip’s colleagues wrote. Today, the findings of the body of the tragically deceased are expected.
