Tragedy in Krosno. BMW entered the crowd during the 1/4 mile race
The Sunday Drag Race competition at the local airport was interrupted by a dramatic accident. A moment after the start of one of the races, the green driver BMW lost control of the vehicle, who slipped and hit a group of supporters. On the recording from the scene you can see that only a low railing was shared by people from the track, and here and there … an ordinary string.
Five people still in the hospital
As a result of the accident, 18 people were injured, of which 14 went to the hospital. Most of them were provided and written home, but five still requires hospitalization. Among the wounded is the youngest participant-a 13-year-old boy. The 18-year-old who is fighting for her life is the hardest injured. Due to the serious state, it was transported from Krosno to a specialist facility in Rzeszów, where he is in the intensive care unit.
It wasn’t a mass event
According to « Fakt », the event did not have the status of a mass event, Because the organizer has planned to participate below a thousand people. Therefore, he was not obliged to report an event to the City Hall or meet the rigorous requirements of the Act. The event was picnic, which meant that it was not subject to the obligation to develop a security plan or obtain an opinion on the technical condition of the area and potential threats. At mass events, such opinions must be given, among others: police, fire brigade, sanitary department and rescue services.
Tickets were not sold – the entrance was based on the bands distributed at the gate. – I got a shoulder band and entered without a problem. I don’t know how many people there were, but they gathered a little. I set myself at a safe distance, closer to the start. Those who stood at the end simply had no luck. Many people set up there to have a better view and record everything with a phone. It was a real horror – scream, panic. It was hard to believe that it really was happening – one of the participants of the event reports to us.
Every driver who registered on the organizer’s website and lodged an entry fee of PLN 250 could take part in the race.
Two people in the hands of investigators. Fate is still uncertain
For now, two men have been detained-a 27-year-old BMW driver and the main organizer of the event, a representative of the company from Warsaw 39-year-old Michał R. Despite the detention, they have not yet been questioned in the prosecutor’s office. This activity was postponed on Tuesday, May 27.
– The findings are underway whether the people present on the spot could be legally and how many viewers. We collect testimonies of witnesses. The key position will be the key, which has already been appointed to this case. It is in his opinion that further decisions will be based to a large extent – prosecutor Krzysztof Zdunek from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Krosno told « Fakt ».
It wasn’t a traffic accident
Investigators do not treat events as an accident in land traffic – due to the closed nature of the event, traffic regulations do not apply here. The investigation is conducted in the direction of bringing danger to the life or health of many people.
Experts indicate that responsibility can rest on both the organizer and – in some circumstances – on the driver. If the experts recognize that the player’s behavior was grossly careless or the vehicle was out of order, it will be possible to extend the allegations. Investigators emphasize that at this stage, one cannot determine what allegations will be made and to whom. – The decisions will only be made after the end of key procedural activities – emphasizes prosecutor Krzysztof Zdunek.
The organization is controversial
Stormy discussions about route security are ongoing on the Internet. The parts of the recordings show that the viewers stood very close to the track, and between them and the speeding cars there were low, portable barriers. But some places were separated from the track only with a regular string. There were no clear buffer zones, which in the event of loss of control over the vehicle could save human life and health.
On the dramatic frames from the moment of the accident you can see how the car falls into a crowd of people standing literally at the edge of the track. – People stood practically in the runway, behind a thin string. It is a miracle that someone has not died on the spot – Internet users comment.
Doubts are not only raised by the way the zone for the audience, but also the fact that the organizer allowed such close contact of viewers with the race route.
The event organizer, the company Amazing Events, in the published statement ensured full cooperation with the services and expressed deep compassion to the victims and their loved ones.
Driver under the magnifier of Internet users
The driver of the Green BMW, 27-year-old Patryk, quickly found himself in the center of Internet users. In the comments on social media, there were voices that his car was seen many times on the streets of Krosno – often during dynamic and loud driving.
At this stage, the police do not confirm whether the man was previously listed or known to officers. Official information is to be provided after the interrogation, which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27.
