Town made to dispose of the house at the expense of the owner

A claim will be sent to the municipality of Fjallabyggð by the Health Inspectorate of the West (HNV) to the effect that the township is discharged from the remaining house at Aðalgata 6b in Siglufjörður, which was damaged in a storm in September 2023.

Other residents seem to be at risk of housing due to its inadvertent condition. Among other things, roof panels of the house were carried on other structures in February.

The owner of the house, Hilmar Daníel Valgeirsson, lived in the house, which is about 600 square meters in size. He talked to mbl.is these days and stated that the disposal was too costly for him and bankruptcy was faced. He lived in the house when the storm damaged it and because of the fact that there was a focus, he received no help from insurance. He suggested that the municipality take over the site against disposing of the house, but Fjallabyggð rejected it.

The housing is bad.

Appealed the Health Authority

The Health Authority had previously sent a statement to the town demanding that the house be removed, but Hilmar appealed HNV to the Environment and Natural Resources Appeals Committee and requested that the decision be withdrawn. A ruling fell yesterday. His request for the invalidation of the decision was not met.

Has had one and a half years

Sigríður Hjaltadóttir, Managing Director of HNV, says that the next steps will be to contact Fjallabyggð and demand that the house be disposed of at Hilmar’s expense. She says it is easy to show Hilmar’s facilities, but that does not change the outcome of the case.

« He has had one and a half years to address this. We will order the municipality to demolish this and bring this into legal disposal at the expense of the owner.

A film company used the house

She says that the directive was previously sent, but the implementation of disposal was postponed after a film company was given the use of the house to record an avalanche. Similarly, the conclusion of the ruling committee was uninhabited.

« It was not supposed to affect the legal decision of the assignment, but of course we would endure while this was going on. We have not gone to far in this matter, » says Sigríður.
