Total US tariffs on Chinese products reaches 145%
The additional tariffs applied by the US to Chinese products now reach 145%, a White House decree released on Wednesday. The 125% increase, announced on Wednesday by the US President for China, has joined the 20% already in force since the beginning of March, in the context of combating fentanyl trafficking, a potent opioid responsible for a serious US public health crisis.
The document details the conditions of application of the new offensive against China and also confirms the partial suspension of some rates directed to other countries. The White House indicated to the CNBC television chain that there is still added rates already in force before Donald Trump’s return to the US presidency.
China is the only country excluded from the 90-day truce decreed on Wednesday, while negotiations with the remaining commercial partners. For Trump, Beijing demonstrated a « lack of respect for the markets. »
Prior to this last increase, the Asian country was already subject to a 104% rate and had imposed retaliatory measures against the US to match this value. The Chinese government claimed to have « a firm will » and « abundant resources » to respond « with determination, » if the US insists on « further intensifying economic and commercial measures. »
« In some moment, and I hope that in the near future, China will realize that the times when the United States and other countries were deceiving are no longer sustainable or acceptable, » Trump wrote on his social network.
