TOPR introduced the third degree of avalanche threat. The conditions are difficult
On Sunday morning, TOPR rescuers announced an increase in avalanche threat to the third degree in the Tatra Mountains. This change results from larger snow and strong winds than forecast. There is almost 80 cm of snow on Kasprowy Wierch, and the temperature dropped to -14 degrees Celsius. Conditions in the higher parts of the mountains are extremely difficult.
The degree of avalanche threat in the Tatra Mountains has been changed. « Strong wind »
There are very unfavorable conditions for tourism in the Tatras. The trails are mostly unknown, which hinders their visibility. Forecasts provide for large clouds and fog, especially at the tops. The third degree of avalanche danger means that the snow cover on steep slopes is moderately or poorly associated, which can lead to an spontaneous descent of avalanches.
Moving around the endangered area requires a lot of experience and the ability to assess local threat. Rescuers recommend avoiding slopes with an unfavorable exhibition and maintaining security measures. Heavy snowfall also worsened the conditions on the roads in Zakopane, where about 10 cm of fresh snow fell.
Weather forecasts for the Tatra and Podhale do not look good.
Forecasts for the Tatras and Podhale provide for further snowfall in the higher parts of the mountains and rain with snow at lower heights. In the Tatra Mountains, frost will remain, and the temperature on the tops will remain below -10 degrees Celsius. The weather improvement can only be expected in the second half of the coming week.
