Tom Waes was not ready for his test piece: already ten previous convictions, especially because of too fast driving (Antwerp)

Tom Waes has since been convicted eleven times for a police judge.

Antwerp

With his conviction for his accident under the influence of the Kennedytunnel, Tom Waes (56) is not ready for his test piece. No less than ten times before, a police judge already sentenced Waes for (serious) traffic infringements. Often for speeding violations, once for drunk driving.

Flanders’ best-known TV presenter has a history in the police court. For example, the verdict learns that Tom Waes once ran into the lamp in 2005 for driving under the influence. Inquiries teaches that he then refused a breath test, which, according to the police judge, was drunk. It led to a conviction.

Now it appears that Waes had to appear regularly for a police judge in the past twenty years. For traffic infringements, often affiliated with exaggerated speed, clarified court spokesperson Luc De Cleir. Especially a serious speed violation on the E40 in Aalter was poor in court. Waes drove there during road works where Zone fifty was gold, far too fast. It earned him a new conviction in 2022.

« Written in the stars »

Another umpteenth, because usually you only appear for a police judge if you drove more than thirty kilometers per hour on a motorway too fast. In the case of less serious violations, you have the chance to escape a police judge with the case of paying an amicable settlement. « That it would go wrong sooner or later was written in the stars, » said the public prosecutor during the handling of the most recent matter.

And so on Monday morning in the Antwerp police court, an eleventh conviction followed, this time for horror crash against a bots absorber at the Kennedytunnel. A crash on the night of 29 to 30 November 2024 where Waes was not wearing a belt and was drunk. That night was 2,44 Promille in his blood.

His lawyer August Blomme came to listen to the verdict.

Little clementia

The fact that his judicial history does not play in his favor was apparent on Monday morning at the hearing: the police judge imposed a three -month driving ban in addition to a fine of 2,560 euros, one month with a delay. Moreover, he was given an alcohol lock for a period of one year.

The court does not respond to his request to impose a sentence with a postponement with the condition that he would actively commit himself to the Emilie Leus fund.

Waes does not appeal

If he wants to once again crawl behind the wheel of a motorized vehicle, he first has to take a riot psychological and physical tests again. Waes, not present in court on Monday, indicated earlier that he would never drink and drive again. In the meantime, his management announced that he would accept the (new) conviction. A second process on the crash to the Kennedytunnel will not be created, unless the Public Prosecution Service still appeals.
